Maine Woods Discovery Hosts: Maine Huts & Trails

The High Peaks region is nestled between Saddleback mountain area with views across Rangeley Lake to the west side, and the remote and pristine rivers region including the Dead River leading to The Forks on the east side. Much of the Longfellow Range (Mt. Abrahm, Sugarloaf, and the Bigelows) is included in addition to a portion of the more northerly Boundary Mountains. The high peaks region. The Route 27 State Scenic Byway runs for several miles along the sparkling Carrabassett River, providing wonderful mountain views at all times of year.
Mountainous terrain proved daunting for early settlers and lumber operators, and it was not until the late 1800s that the introduction of a narrow gauge railroad (museum in Phillips!) opened the territory to the outside world. The area once included the Town of Flagstaff, the remains of which today lie beneath the lake bearing its name. The Dead River Historical Museum located in Stratton tells the story.
A four season recreational playground, the High Peaks area offers world-class hiking, downhill and cross-country skiing, paddling, fishing, and mountain biking. Visitors can enjoy specialty foods and shopping for local products in mountain villages (Kingfield, Stratton, Phillips, Strong). While in Kingfield, stop by the Stanley Museum to learn about the twins (F.O. and F.E.) who invented the Stanley Steamer and to view their sister Chansonetta’s stunning photography. Multiple cultural events include the Kingfield POPS annual outdoor music and art festival.
