The Kennebec River, along with its sister, the Dead, provided early Wabanaki people with a water trail linking the Maine Coast with the St. Lawrence in Canada. Their trail was later used by Revolutionary War brigades and incoming French Canadian and Irish immigrants. Today, the Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway, which runs north from Solon (the Solon Meeting House offers fabulous murals depicting biblical scenes) to Jackman (situated only about 2 hours south of Quebec City), provides travelers with a spectacular and historic opportunity to retrace earlier steps.

The Upper Kennebec Area is known for the pristine beauty of its forests and the wild tumbling of its remote rivers. Area river runs are especially enjoyed by whitewater paddling enthusiasts. Experienced paddlers are drawn to the challenging Kennebec River Gorge, with rapids like Big Mama and White Washer. The Dead River also boasts its share of forbidding-sounding stretches, like Elephant Rock and the Mine Field. Of course, rafting outfitters can get even the most inexperienced paddlers through these wild places, and less experienced paddlers will be fine on their own on the lower sections of the Kennebec (south of The Forks).

With magnificent rivers, plentiful forests, miles of recreational trails (hiking in summer, snowmobiling and cross country skiing in winter) and rich cultural traditions (“ici, en parle Francais!”), the Upper Kennebec Area offers four seasons of outdoor discovery and exploration opportunity!
