Hiking

There’s no better way to explore the woods than on foot. All you need are strong boots, some clean H2O and a thirst for adventure. Plus, hiking is virtually free and it’s excellent exercise, regardless of your age.

There are an unlimited supply of trails to hike here in the Maine Woods and the trails run from easy to expert. So there is nothing stopping you from getting out there and exploring a little bit.

Many come here to explore Baxter State Park and climb to top of state’s highest peak Mt. Katahdin. From there you can likely see to the edge of the map and also spot parts of the Bigelow Range and the Mahoosuc Range. The Katahdin climb is well worth it, but it does come with some challenge as well.

The storied Appalachian Trail also cuts through the parts of The Maine Woods and completes its journey at Mt. Katahdin, offering visitors the chance to partake in one of our nations grandest hiking traditions.

Whether you want to strike out on a multi-day backpacking adventure or bring the whole family on an afternoon hike to a scenic outlook or through ripe blueberry fields, our experienced Maine Woods Discovery hosts will help you plan the perfect excursion to fit your needs.

The trail networks in the Maine Woods are so extensive that you might find you don’t know where to begin. That’s where Maine Woods Discovery outfitters come in! Let them recommend routes, offer trailside lodging – both remote and accessible – and provide you with experienced guides. As you meander between comfortable wilderness lodges, learn where to find breathtaking natural waterfalls, or plan your Katahdin summit bid, you’ll discover that the possibilities for wilderness adventure in the region are truly endless.
