Nordic Ski and Stay

Scandinavian settlers were the first to bring skiing to the mountains of Maine. Today their practical means of traveling across a snow covered landscape has been transformed into a great source of recreational adventure for young and old.

To create this Nordic Ski and Stay package, Maine Huts and Trails teams up with the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center to offer a unique three days of world-class Nordic skiing in western Maine. Your package includes a day of skiing at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center (groomed trail complex, equipment rentals and instruction available here!) and two days of trekking along the newly established Maine Hut Trail. The Maine Hut Trail was laid out by John Morton, one of our country’s best known Nordic trail designers, and is expertly maintained by the Maine Hut Trail staff.

Along the trail and included in the package, guests receive two nights of lodging, the first at Poplar Stream Falls Hut and the second at Flagstaff Lake Hut. Your accommodations at the Huts are “authentic backcountry”…we provide the bunk/mattress, you provide the sleeping bag!  Hot showers, toilets, potable water are all provided.  At the end of your trek, we give you and your gear a well deserved shuttle ride back to your point of departure.

While at the huts, your meals will be prepared fresh each day by the hut staff, and you will be treated to an energy systems tour, showing how we utilize hydro and solar-power to create a self-sustaining facility (Huts are “off the grid.”).

Please see our what-to-bring list at www.mainehuts.org so you can be prepared for your overnight stay.  All meals are included in your stay.  You’ll also receive an MH&T Trail Map.
